How Does Pregnancy Affect A Teenager - 873 Words

As a counselor, my primary focus would be to ensure that Nikki’s emotional and mental distress is resolved. As we know, adolescence is a stage of development during which, teenagers go through physical, social, cognitive and emotional changes. Some examples include self-identity, peer pressure, conflict with family and sexuality. As far as the 14 year old Nikki’s situation is concerned, she is not only having a difficult time coping with her parents’ divorce but she is also pregnant and is considering abortion. Pregnancy can affect a teenager in many ways. The teenager tends to develop frustration, anger, guilt, fear, shock or even depression in some cases. During the first therapy session, I will inform Nikki about the limitations to confidentiality. Later, I will encourage Nikki to discuss her cultural views and how her values can support or conflict with her choice of aborting the baby. Next, I would explore my own values and beliefs with regard to abortion and understand how they might impact the whole counseling process. Perhaps, this will help in eliminating any biases or stereotypical beliefs I may have about Nikki’s cultural background. I strongly believe that acquiring cultural competence is an ongoing process. Becoming culturally competent will broaden a counselor’s own perspectives and it will enhance the counselor’s professional growth.
