Designing The Perfect Leadership Development Experience Education Essay
Designing The Perfect Leadership Development Experience Education Essay Leadership development is improving the qualities of leadership. This can be achieved by Planned and systematic efforts (Groves, 2007 cited in Amagoh, 2009). Leadership development programme is similar to the learning organization concept which focus on facilitating change, empowerment, knowledge sharing, opportunities for learning development and promotes leadership development. (Amagoh, 2009) Nowadays companies struggle with leadership development. They send the top performing employees to attend few leadership development workshops seminars and expect the participants to be the leaders in a week or so. This does not work as expected since personals have different characteristics and abilities. National wide financial have found four kinds of people who engage in this type of development programmes. They are reluctant leaders who have all the necessary skills to be a manager but not confident that they would be effective leaders. Second type is arrogant leaders who believe they have all the leadership skills but lack those skills. Third category is unknown leaders who have the right leadership skills but since they are not good at developing relationship, they fail to be selected as effective leaders. Finally the workaholics which we come across very often (Griffin, 2004). In my individual leadership development programme I have to first identify myself among the four types. Even though occasionally I have played the role of a leader, it makes me to think whether I could be in a leaders position of an organization? This more sounds like a reluctant leader. Initializing the development programme can be based on major leadership traits, which are intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability. Intelligence Studies found that leaders have higher intelligence compare to non-leaders (Zaccaro, Kemp and Bader, 2004, cited in Northouse, 2007). Intelligence helps in solving the critical problems effectively. I believe intelligence partly come from birth and partly by continuously involved in activities which could boost it. This can also be acquired by observation. Self-confidence This is one area which I focus to improve that in turn will help in chairing an organization. Leadership is all about influencing the followers in order to achieve the vision. Self-confidence is necessary to assure that the way leader influence is appropriate. Determination This includes initiative, persistence, dominance and drive (Northouse, 2007, p. 20). Determination will direct the followers in a desirable path in order to achieve the vision. Integrity This refers to honesty and trustworthiness. Developing the integrity skills will enable confidence in others, which in turn enables delegation, and thereby followers feel ownership and motivated. Sociability Leaders one of the main tasks is to develop and maintain relationships within and outside the organization. Therefore, skills such as being friendly, outgoing, courteous, tactful and handling issues diplomatically are essential to be an effective leaders. Stevens, (n.d. p.42) says managers wear square hats and learn through training. Leaders wear sombreros and opt for education. Some of the learning through education to become an effective leader are understating, generating ideas, questioning, looking for processes rather than content, initiating strategies, long term focus, risk taking, open minded, skill of imagination, etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ therefore the leadership development programme should highlight the above aspects. Bennis, (2009,) says on becoming a leader the first thing is to identify is knowing yourself. He has also identified four lessons of self-knowledge (Bennis, 2009, p.52) You are your own best teacher Accept responsibility. Blame no one You can learn anything you want to learn True understanding comes from reflecting on your experience I would say the basic mantras for me to become a leader will be the above four lessons. I would also use integrated solution approach and some other common senses. Integrated solution approach This includes eight steps (Weiss and Molinaro, 2006, cited in Amagoh, 2009). Developing a comprehensive strategy for development Designing the development activities according to organizational and global challenges. For example, compare to the earlier days the social interaction among different nationalities are a must in order to perform as an effective leader. Being in Dubai, in a routine basis we would meet around 180 nationalities where each of them are different. According to Bennis (n.d., cited in The emirates center for strategic studies and research, 2002) the new leadership should understand and practice the power of appreciation, keep remind the people of what is important and generate sustain trust. Use the leadership stories. This is one of the excellent learning which I consider. Reading and understanding different leaderships styles and world-class leaders way of leading will help in enhancing the skills of leadership. Understanding both global and local individuals needs. Using emergent design and implementation will also enable development. Understanding the culture. Focusing on critical moments of leadership life cycle. Applying a mix of methodology will enable development. On top of the above, importance have to be given for personal growth, understanding the concepts, learning through feedbacks and mistakes, skill building, etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ will also enable development (Allen and Hartman, 2008, cited in Amagoh, 2009). In answering, How would you know it was effective, I would say if the leadership effectiveness is achieved, it is obvious that leadership development plan was effective. And on the other hand we should also understand leadership development is not one time learning rather it is an ongoing learning process. Therefore, any inefficiencies or neglected skills once identified can be learned. The way we do business around the globe has changed in past dramatically and it is also evidence that the change is continuing. To cope up with the challenging dynamic world leaders has to continuously sharpen their skills. One of the example which I would quote is the professional organizations like CIMA (UK) and ACCA (UK) have introduced programmes called CPD (continuing professional development) to keep members connected with the current and changing world. Leadership effectiveness can be defined as successfully influencing followers in order to achieve the organizational vision (Vardiman et al, 2006; Bodinson, 2005 cited in Amagoh, 2009). Effective leadership is one of the competitive advantages of an organization. In addition, the effective leader determines the organizational performance and growth who are expected to establish vision and strategies, maintain relationship and manage change in order to ensure the organizational growth and survival within the competitors. In conclusion, leadership development programme has to be designed by considering various aspects and skills needed to be an effective leader. In addition, continues progress monitoring and identifying lacking skills will enable to plan the next step of the development programme. We should also understand and accept the fact leadership development is not a one time learning but it is a lifelong learning. Sangeeven

Review of Binding Updates Security in MIPv6
Review of Binding Updates Security in MIPv6 Avishek Duttaà Vikram Raju R. Abstractââ¬â Mobile Nodes (MN) in Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) are given the opportunity to eliminate triangle routing that is inefficient with their own corresponding node (CN) using Route Optimization (RO). This greatly improves the performance of the network. Unfortunately, using this method allows several security vulnerabilities to manifest itself with the MIPv6. Among those, common issues are those concerns the verification of authenticity and authorization of Binding Updates during the process of RO. These types of unauthenticated and unauthorized BUs are the key to various types of malicious attacks. Since it is expected that MIPv6 will be supported by IPv6, several mechanism to ensure BU security will be crucial in the next generation Internet. This article focuses on Mobile IPv6 and security considerations. Keywords/Index Termââ¬âIKE, Mobile IPv6, Network Security, Potential threats in MIPv6 I. Introduction The way MIPv6 operates can be seen in Figure 1 [1], with 3 node types, namely the Home Agent (HA), Mobile Node (MN) and the Corresponding Node (CN) [2], while MNââ¬â¢s mobility is detected by a router advertisement message including an MN able to make a router send its advertisement message by request, if needed. Following mobility detection, the MN gets a CoA unlike in MIPv4, after which it sends the BU message to the HA and the communicated corresponding node (a node wishing to connect to, or is communicating with MN). The HA and corresponding node update the binding list and send acknowledgement messages [1], meaning that the Mobile IPv6 allows an MN to alter its attachment point to the internet while maintaining established communications [3]. This paper presents an analysis of both Route Optimisation (RO) and Identity Based Encryption (IBE) protocol with proposal to strengthen the level of security of a BU method. This method uses the public key to create an authentication th at is stronger. II. MN-HA Authentication Mutual authentication between an MN and its HA is mandatory in MIPv6, and usually performed with IPSec and IKE, while session key generation and authentication are done with IKE. Using X.509 certificates in IKE is the existing method of performing these tasks. The MN moves to a foreign network and obtains a new CoA. MN carries out a BU on its HA (where the new CoA is registered). HA sends a binding acknowledgement to MN. A Correspondent Node (CN) tries to contact MN, with HA intercepting packets destined to MN. Next, HA tunnels all packets from CN to MN using MNs CoA. When MN replies to the CN, it may use its current CoA (and bind to the CN) and communicate with the CN directly (ââ¬Å"route optimizationâ⬠), or it could tunnel all its packets through the HA. Sometimes MN and HA share a common secret, possibly occurring in WLAN instances when MN shifts to another WLAN which requires authentication [4]. If there are no shared secrets, extending the IKEv2 authentication process to identity-based authentication as opposed to X.509-based authentication certificates is usual. It can also be assumed that both MN and HA use the same PKG, and according to the relationship between these three entities, any trust level from I to III may be applied during private key delivery. Regarding IKE, two main methods of implementing IBE exist, the first of which involves modifying IKEââ¬â¢s four-way handshake while the second utilizes EAP to generate a new IBE-based EAP authentication method [4]. A. Modifying IKE IKE could implement IBE through the addition of a third authentication method, other than the previous shared secret and X.509 authentication. Instead of X.509 certificates, IKE also uses ââ¬Å"IBE certificatesâ⬠. IBE-based authentication functions fundamentally the same as X.509 authentication, in that to authenticate peers the same information block should be signed as in the X.509-based authentication, in addition to a signature based on IBE (i.e. the Hess signature). Currently, identities are replacing certificates and revocation lists do not need to be checked. Ehmke (2007) implemented a prototype which can realize this idea. Performance wise, clearly transmit certificates or certificate requests are no longer necessary since the IKE identity can be used straight as the public key for authentication. Also, expensive certificate-chain checking is redundant while elliptic curve cryptography-based hardware- accelerated IBE algorithms are sometimes quite efficient, particularl y in embedded devices [4]. B. Extensible Authentication Protocol Several wireless networks utilize the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) [5] for access authentication. EAP techniques commonly deal with AAA servers which affect the required authentications, after which notifications are relayed back to a functional module (Network Access Server) in the access network. For Mobile IPv6 [6], the Binding Authentication Data option [7] helps enable different authentication techniques, while a subtype exists for AAA- based authentication like EAP. On the other hand, there still are EAP methods requiring extra handling and specifications which present Binding Authentication Data option documentation does not provide. Currently, specification from this document is for at least some very widely deployed EAP methods, so, often, when EAP is needed, Mobile IPv6 tunnel redirection to a wireless deviceââ¬â¢s new CoA can be done much faster [8-10]. C. Using Extensible Authentication Protocol Figure 2 illustrates possible steps in EAP implementation. It is advisable to use EAP as part when establishing a concurrent shared key to be used in the final two message exchanges leading to authentication [4]. Chen and Kudlaââ¬â¢s key agreement with IBE technique is one alternative protocol (protocol 2ââ¬â¢ in [11]) that can function in the absence of a key escrow, so CERTREQ and CERT messages in steps 2, 3, 4 are not necessary (Figure. 2). Figure 3 illustrates the resulting IKE Initial Message exchange. 1. I _ R: HDR, SAi1, KEi, Ni 2. R _ I: HDR, SAr1, KEr, Nr, [CERTREQ] 3. I _ R: HDR, ESK{IDi,[CERTREQ,][IDr,]SAi2,TSi,TSr} 4. IKE Initial Message Exchange: Authentication using EAP [12]. Here, the same PKG is shared by MN and HA, where P is a public PKG parameter, and HA and MN choose the random numbers a and b, respectively. The Chen-Kudla protocol produces a session key solely for message 7 and 8 authentication. The AUTH payloads have to authenticate messages 3 and 4 based on MAC and a secret key generated by an EAP protocol [11]. 1. MN _ HA: HDR, SAMN1, KEMN, NMN 2. HA _ MN: HDR, SAHA1, KEHA, NHA 3. MN _ HA: HDR, ESK{IDMN,[IDHA,]SAMN2,TSMN,TSHA} 4. HA _ MN: HDR, ESK{IDHA,AUTH,EAP_CK_Req(aà ·P,aà ·QHA)} 5. MN _ HA: HDR, ESK{EAP_CK_Res(bà ·P,bà ·QMN)} 6. HA _ MN: HDR, ESK{EAP(success)} 7. MN _ HA: HDR, ESK{AUTH} 8. HA _ MN: HDR, ESK{AUTH,SAHA2,TSMN,TSHA} Fig 3. IKE Initial Message Exchange: EAP with IBE Authentication [12]. But since IBE uses PKG, it is almost impossible to guess which MN will be communicated by the CN. We cannot simply assume the same PKG is used by both MN and CN. Multi-PKG is used instead but it is not recommended for larger networks. III. MN-CN Authentication Via the MIPv6 protocol, MN can keep its network connection even when the network attachment modifies [13]. An MN can be reached at its home address (HA) anytime, even when not physically in its home network. When an MN is connected to a foreign network it obtains a CoA from the local router through stateless or stateful autoconfiguration. Next, for home r egistra tion, the MN sends HA its current location information (CoA) in a BU message, then HA can redirect and tunnel packets intended. for the MNââ¬â¢s home address, to the MNââ¬â¢s CoA. When a foreign network MN is in contact with a CN (a stationary or mobile peer communicating with a MN) through the HA, bidirectional tunnelling takes place for instances when CN is not bound to the MN (registration is in progress) or MIPv6 is not supported by CN [4]. If the CN supports MIPv6, a more effective mobile routing technique, Route Optimization (RO), can be used. RO is effective as it provides the most direct, shortest path of transmitting messages between an MN and a CN, eliminating the need for packets to pass through the HA, and avoiding triangular routing (bidirectional tunnelling). Prior to setting up RO, the MN must send CN a BU packet containing its CoA with present location data. On the other hand, security risks with RO [14] can be for example that an MN may send CN a false BU packet and redirect the communication stream to a desired location, resulting in a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack. Thus, for increased security, it is important to authenticate BUs in RO [4] [15]. What happens between a CN and MN is not the same as between an MN and its HA. Since CN could be any node, MN and CN have no shared secrets or trusted certificates. Thus, Return Routability (RR) can be used, as: â⬠¢ An MN sends CN a home test init (HoTi) and care-of test init (CoTi). HoTi is sent directly through the HA and CoTi. HoTi has the home address and CoTi has the CoA as source addresses, both including a cookie. â⬠¢ Upon receiving either HoTi or CoTi message, CN immediately answers with a home test (HoT) and care- of test (CoT) message which gets sent to the respective source address. Each reply contains the cookie recovered from the nonce indenx, corresponding init message, and a keygen token, later for BU authentication use. When MN receives HoT and CoT, RR is done. Only MN can receive packets sent to both its HA and CoA, and can now hash the two tokens to calculate the binding key. This key is utilized for generating a Message Authentication Code (MAC) for BUs, and MAC can be verified by CN. RR provides an analysis of a nodes reach-ability during authentication but do not validate address ownership in IPv6. IV. MIPv6 Security Analysis Providing security against different types of malicious attacks e.g. denial of service (DoS), connection hijacking, man- in-the-middle and impersonation, are the basic objectives for the development of IPv6. The objective of improved security is to create routing changes that are safe against all threats. Threats are based on the routing changes that provides mobility in the network. Threats faced by Mobile IPv6 security can be divided into different categories: __ Binding update (BU) to HA type threats __ Route Optimisation to CN type threats __ Threats that attack the tunnelling process between HA and MN __ Threats that uses Mobile IPv6 routing header to return traffic of other nodes Binding update and route optimisation threats are related to authentication of binding messages. Communication between MN and HA needs trust and communication authentication. This is because MN agrees to implement the HA services therefore relationship between the two must first be secure. However, the CN and MN does not have prior relationship but authenticating messages between the two is still possible. For example, this is possible by authenticating the public key. If a malicious packet is sent to the HA using the same source address as the MN, the HA will then forward the packet containing the MNs source address contained in the malicious node. However, this DoS attack can be prevented by using an algorithm to verify the BU message receives by the HA. Such threat can also be avoided when a new routing header is used to replaces the incorrect header that manoeuvres around firewall rules and obtaining a constrained address [16, 17]. V. Proposed Protection of BU Message Corresponding Author: XYZ, [emailprotected] Once the BU message is complete, the MN will receive normal traffic from the CN with the new CoA. The CN with the new nonce sends to the MN a Binding Update Verification (BUV) within a specific time frame e.g. 10 seconds. The MN then needs to reply within 10 seconds otherwise the connection between MN and CN will be terminated. This method minimises any damages caused by bombing attacks where packets are sent to the MN by malicious nodes. Cryptography Generated Address (CGA) can also be use to make spoofing type attacks more harder. Private keys can be use to signed the message as well. Since redirection attacks requires both public and private keys to perform[18-20]. Possible threats and solution is listed in table 1 [4, 17]. VI. Conclusion The requirement for Mobile IPv6 is still not complete considering there are some essential issues that are not addressed. One of the most important issues are protocol security because without secure protection against attacks, the protocol would not be accepted thus will not work at all. Presently, the standard method use for BU protection in transport mode as well as securing the connection for control message sent during home registration method is the Encapsulation Security Payload (ESP). IPSec has several advantages over SSL/TLS which is IPSec can perform without IP restriction, any protocol can be encrypted and also encrypt any packets with just their IP headers. Unfortunately, IPSec needs to be configured with various settings thus making it complicated. The IKE protocol can control the mutual authentication and cryptographic algorithm negotiations as well as dynamic key management. Additionally, authentication method such as shared secret, Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) or X.509 certificates can be use to create safe communication between peers. Essay --
Fate plays an important role in Romeo and Juliet. Who thought this four letter word would play such a big part in this play? In this play we see that the characters believe fate is what rules their lives, and that it is their reality. Their lives lie in the hands of fate. It always brings trouble, especially between the Capulet and Montague families. The fates of both Romeo and Juliet were predetermined in the prologue when it said ââ¬Å"a pair of star crossed lovers take their life.â⬠(Prologue) As their love for each other progresses, so does the ominous signs of death that show up. Characters start having premonitions and dreams of their unhappy ending. Even after the omens and signs, the lovers loved each other so deeply that they did not care about them as they just easily dismissed them. We as the audience know that Romeo and Juliet will die in the end, and their fate is shown and unraveled throughout the plot. Because as the audience we know the fate of Romeo and Juliet from the beginning, we are always hoping that they will take different paths of life. However, both their fates a...

Hesters Ambivalence in The Scarlet Letter :: Scarlet Letter essays
Hester's Ambivalence in The Scarlet Letter Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Scarlet Letter, Hester's attitudes toward her adultery are ambivalent. This ambivalence is shown by breaking the book into three different parts. In each part her attitudes change significantly. Hester starts by seeing her act as a sin that she is sorry for committing. She changes and no longer feels sorry for the sin. Finally, Hester sees the act as not sinful, but she regrets committing it. In the first part, covering the first six chapters, Hester thinks of her action as a sin. In chapter four she tells her husband that it was her fault for committing adultery when she says, "I have greatly wronged thee" (79). In chapter six Hawthorne writes that Hester knows "her deed had been evil" (92). This evil deed, in Hester's eyes, causes Pearl to act sinful, so Hester feels overwhelming guilt. At this point Hester feels that her actions were evil and were her fault, therefore she is sorry for committing adultery. In chapter five Hester's attitudes are the same but Hawthorne shows that these attitudes are not stable and are susceptible to change. Hester moves to a cottage on the outskirts of Boston, but because her sentence does not restrict her to the limits of the Puritan settlement, Hester could return to Europe to start over. She decides to stay because she makes herself believe that the town "has been the scene of her guilt, and here should be the scene of her earthly punishment" (84). This belief gives the impression that she views her action as a sin and feels a need to further punish herself. But this belief only covers her actual feelings. To the contrary, as Hawthorne describes, her real reason for staying is that "There dwelt, there trod the feet of one with whom she deemed herself connected in a union, that, unrecognized on earth, would bring them together before the bar of final judgment, and make their that marriage altar, for a joint futurity of endless retribution" (84). This comment means that the real reason for her staying is that Reverend Dimmsdale, the father of her child, lives there and she hopes to someday marry him.

Bush :: essays research papers
American Government Bushââ¬â¢s Address Before this speech I didnââ¬â¢t know what to think about Bush as a president. After reading his speech my view on him has changed greatly. Not only did talk about the American people but also other countries. Through out his speech he pleased both the anti-war Americans but the pro-war Americanââ¬â¢s also. Bush has a lot of respect, or bravery for saying that "the United States respects the people of Afghanistan--after all, we are currently its largest source of humanitarian aid--but we condemn the Taliban regime". It shows that he has his thoughts all collected and he is not rushing and attacking and putting blame on the people of Afganistan. He still has concerned for them, that they are just repressing their own people He tried to please every American by being saying there will be a war but not like other wars. By saying ââ¬Å"Our response involves far more than instance retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have even seen.â⬠He went on to say that itââ¬â¢s not a war against Afganistan but a war on terrorists'. I liked how bush puts his foot down and threatens the Taliban. Demanding them to close permanently every terrorist training camp and hand over every terrorist and everyone who participated to the proper authority. Saying that his demands are not open to negotiation or discussion so they must turn in the terrorists or "or they will share in their fate. He is threatening them but also has enough bravery to do it considering what they have already done In the last part of his speech he goes on how "we will come togetherâ⬠to strengthen American and so on then how he hopes that in the months ahead life returns to almost normal but how "our resolve must not pass". We will always remember that day and to whom it happened. I also liked how Bush showed the police shield of a man named George Howard, who died at the W. trade center trying to save others and how "This is my reminder of lives that ended, and a task that does not end. Then he ends it with how he will not yield, will not rest for the freedom and security for the

What is the purpose and role of a résumé?
I think the main purpose of a resume is to provide a company with an overview of your professional achievements and background. Your resume acts as a marketing document, whether on paper or online, and its purpose is to introduce you to potential employers, promote what it is you have to offer and entice them into wanting to know more. According to Lauri Harwood, ââ¬Å"a resume is a brief document, typically one or two pages, that details your qualifications for a particular job or job target.â⬠Describe each main section of a rà ©sumà © from the textbook and what should be included in each of these sections: 1) Contact Information 2) Objective 3) Profile 4) Qualifications 5) Work Experience 6) Related Experience 7) Education Contact Information ââ¬â The header of your rà ©sumà © should include your name, address, phone number, and email address, if you regularly use it. When submitting a paper version of your rà ©sumà ©, it is visually appealing to use a large font fo r your name. Include both a local and permanent address and a phone number so that an employer can easily reach you.This is especially important for graduating students. ââ¬Å"The objective is a concise statement of your immediate employment goal (not your long-term career goal). It is the first section of the resume, immediately below the contact information on the first page. â⬠A job objective statement shows employers the direction you want to go, your work preferences, and serves as a focal point for employers to review and analyze your rà ©sumà ©. It allows employers to immediately identify the kind of position you want.If you are looking for jobs in a number of different fields, you need to have a different job objective for each position. The profile section is a brief statement that describes you by stating your most relevant experience and qualifications. ââ¬Å"Use a profile instead of an objective on your master resume, if you can describe your qualifications wit h a job title (based on your overall experience, not just your current job), use the title as the heading for this section. â⬠The qualifications section is a bulleted list of skills that highlights why you are the ideal candidate for the job.This is the place to put important or interesting information that does not fit anywhere else. With the advance of technology, it is increasingly important to include a section on computer skills. This should include any of your knowledge of computer programs, hardware, software, database knowledge, or Internet functions. If you have any other notable skills, such as foreign languages, musical talents, or writing skills include these here. In the work experience section of a resume, list the jobs you have held, starting with the most recent one.Start each one with the most important information; your job title and dates of employment. On the next line, list the name of the organization and the city and state, starting on the third line wri te a brief oriented description of your responsibilities. You would use the related experience section to highlight other experiences that relates to your job objective. Include activities such as memberships, awards, and leadership positions earned in professional or trade association such as honorary groups, social, service, and school organizations.In the education section you list your education in reverse chronological order (most recent first). List the technical schools, colleges and universities you have attended, the years of attendance, and the degrees or certificates you earned. In this section, include any information about your degrees, including where and when you graduated; dates; major, minor, or concentration; certification; and academic awards and honors. Make sure you use the official names for schools, degrees and majors/minors. I think you should include your GPA if it is an asset.
Symbolism of the Island
The Island Major Joe Ridge View High School English 1 Mrs. Walker December 17, 2012 There are many different symbols in the book Lord of the Flies. Some of the symbols represent peace and some represent war. Some of the characters themselves represent different symbols. The item of symbolism that stood out the most was the island itself. The island itself is an excellent item of symbolism because it uses the boys themselves to convey what it stands for thus almost making itself seem alive. The island represents peace, atavism, the struggle to hang on to civilization, life, and the struggle to hang on to humanity.The island itself stands for peace. It shows this through Simon. The special place in the jungle where Simon went shows the peaceful part of the island. There is not much of it but it is there hidden by all of the confusion other factors at work. ââ¬Å"He came to a last place where more sunshine fell. Since they had not so far to go for light the creepers had woven a great m at that hung at the side of an open space in the jungle; for here a patch of rock came close to the surface and would not allow more than little plants and ferns to grow. The whole space was walled with dark aromatic bushes, and was a bowl of heat and light.A great Tree, fallen across one corner, leaned against the trees that still stood and rapid climber flaunted red and yellow sprays right to the topâ⬠(Golding 56). Simon found that place peaceful and beautiful. He goes there in the middle of the night just to escape the atavistic character of the island itself which is portrayed through the forest and Jack. The island also shows atavism through the forest and through Jack. Throughout the story the boys continued referring back to creepers ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t hardly move with all these creeper thingsâ⬠(Golding 7).Creepers are like vines that climb up tree trunks and grow across open patches of ground. They cover up the trees and ground and make it hard for the tree or the ground to get sunlight or water. The vines take the water from the trees so that they can survive in the conditions of the island. Jack and his hunters do similarly the same thing with the pigs. The boys engulf the pig with their presence and beat it to death making it nearly impossible for them to escape the rancorous attacks and also making it nearly impossible for the pigs to breed and fill the island with wildlife and swine.The island also portrays life. For this it uses the open space that Simon found and the fire. When Simon found his special part of the island, he noticed that the creepers did not grow there allowing the fruit trees and the flowers to grow there abundantly. The fire also symbolizes the life of not only the island but the life of the boysââ¬â¢ morale and hope of going home again. ââ¬Å"The fire was dead. They saw the straightaway; saw what they had really known down on the beach when the smoke of home had beckoned. The fire was out, smokeless and dead ; the watchers were gone.A pile of unused fuel lay ready,â⬠(Golding 67-68). The boys saw a ship passing by in the distance when they found out that the fire was dead. At that moment Ralph called an assembly. Jack and his hunters came from the forest with a pig. Ralph told Jack about the fire and the ship but the only thing the Jack was concentrated on was how he and his hunters managed to capture the pig. The Island also represents the struggle to hang on to civilization. The Island shows this through the scar that the plane left when it crashed.The entire island is in order with creepers and trees making an attempt to grow everywhere. The beach is sandy and the lagoon is not too far from the beach everything on the island was neat and in order. The plane crashed it left a scar that left a path of burned creepers fallen trees and overturned dirt and debris. The rocks on the island also had a role in breaking the rope of civilization. When Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses broke they fell on a rock after Jack smacked them off of Piggyââ¬â¢s face. ââ¬Å"Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggyââ¬â¢s head. Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks.Piggy cried out in terror: ââ¬ËMy specs! ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦ ââ¬ËOne sideââ¬â¢s brokenâ⬠(Golding 71). At that moment in the book the normal worldââ¬â¢s idea of civilization went out of the window and Jackââ¬â¢s idea took over. Ralph and piggy both wanted to keep the island as civilized as possible. Piggy gave ralph the idea to blow the conch and try to call all the boys to one central location. While resting on the mountain he realized the conditions of himself and the other boys on the island: With the memory of his sometime clean self as a standard, Ralph looked them over.They were dirty, not with the spectacular dirt of boys who have fallen into mud or been brought down hard on a rainy day. Not one of them was an obvious subject for a shower, and yetââ¬âhair much too long , tangled here and there, knotted round a dead leaf or a twig; faces cleaned fairly well by the process of eating and sweating but marked in the less accessible angles with a kind of shadow; clothes, worn away, stiff like his own with sweat, put on, not for decorum or comfort but out of custom; the skin of the body, scurfy with brineââ¬âHe discovered with a little fall of heart that these were to conditions he took as normal now and that he did not mind, (Golding 110). This realization from Ralph shows that he misses the rest of the world and that being shut off from the rest of the world gave him and even stronger need to try to restore civilization on the island. The island also symbolizes the struggle to hang on to the humanity of the island. Before the boys came to island the pigs had no real enemy that was known. The boys were the same way.When the boys were luckily landed on the island the pigââ¬â¢s predator became Jack and his hunters. It was easy for Jack to find his first pig but not as easy for him to kill it. The second time he carried out his task. As the story continues Jack has to go through different procedures and tricks in order to find a pig. He painted his face, he crawled around on the ground following a pig slide and pig droppings. He ends up killing pigs almost every day for the group. The pigs adapt to Jackââ¬â¢s ways and try to avoid him.When Jack killed the mother sow, the amount of humanity left on the island was in question. ââ¬Å"Rodger found a lodgment for his point and began to push till he was leaning with his whole weight. The spear moved forward inch by inchâ⬠¦ ââ¬ËRight up her ass! ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Golding 135). The island was the most important symbol in the book. Without the island and the natural features of it then one may not think that the island could stand for anything other than an uninhabited graveyard for an assortment of young boys.In order to really see the significance of the island one needs to look closely at the events that happen and where they happen in the book. The island talked to the reader through the characters of the story. Each character represented a different trait of the island. Jack was the fear of the island, Piggy was the gentle side, Ralph was the firm part of the island, and Simon was the peace on the island. There are many other situations like this in many other stories, one just has to pay attention and open their eyes. References Golding, W. (1954). Lord of the Flies.
